Founded in 1870 by Swedish settlers, Immanuel Lutheran
Church (ELCA) has had only 11 pastors in its 135-year history. Our average
weekly worship attendance is about 150, and
like
many traditional Protestant churches today, several of our young adults,
families and middle-aged members aren't actively involved in the life of
the congregation. Despite our growing ministries, variety of activities
for people of all ages and warm, supportive and welcoming environment,
this age group is mostly absent from our pews. How do we reach this vital
part of our family of believers and bring some freshness into worship without
defying our time-honored traditions and style of liturgical worship?
These are the questions our Council, pastor, congregation and Worship & Music Ministry Team have been asking the past few years. Mission Road grew from a handful of musicians teaching each other new songs and styles in the summer of 2004 to a full-size praise band that practices twice a week, helps lead worship once or twice a month and performs at a variety of other events at Immanuel and within the community.
What's our style, you ask? Eclectic, we suppose.
We can't define it for you. We're just having fun and making a lot of joyful
noise!
Mission Road helps lead worship on the 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month (8:30 & 11:00 a.m.) at Immanuel, when we use the 1991 Hymnal Supplement liturgical setting by Marty Haugen, a well-known composer, musician and enthusiast of renewing worship.
In addition to liturgy, we present contemporary worship music before and after the service, during communion and the offering. The congregation joins us on songs from the hymnal. We also use songs from other resources like John Ylvisaker, an advocate of bridging contemporary and classical worship music.
Our goal: to introduce different kinds of worship music to the congregation. We do it all-- gospel, jazz and blues-inspired tunes, worship & praise, traditional hymns, oldies like Sister Janet Mead's 1974 rendition of The Lord's Prayer, rock, and music by contemporary Christian music artists from MercyMe and the Newsboys to Jaci Velasquez and Rebecca St. James.
Join Mission Road and Immanuel Lutheran Church
for worship and get ready... you might begin with intense meditation as
we call you to worship. You'll lift your voice and heart in different tunes
of praise during the service. And there's a pretty darn good chance you'll
be boogying your way out of the sanctuary as we send you on your way out
into the world to love and serve the Lord-- thanks be to God!
